Common Orthopedic Injuries & Conditions in Youth Sports
Some of the most common injuries and conditions affecting today’s young athlete include fractures and dislocations,
cartilage and ligament damage, medial collateral ligament tear (baseball elbow),
meniscus cartilage tear, ulnar collateral ligament (UCL tear)
contusions and various tendinopathies (tennis elbow syndrome,
biceps tendonitis, shoulder tendonitis).
While balanced conditioning and strength training, along with proper equipment can help reduce a young athlete's risk of a sports-related injury, adequate rest between activities is equally important in avoiding many of the overstress or repetitive stress conditions.
Repetitive stress conditions such as tendonitis and ligament strain are the result of constant stress placed limbs and joints without adequate rest. Tendons and ligaments in the pressured area become strained and compressed in an irritated and often inflamed environment - becoming vulnerable to more serious damage if not addressed.
A few key elements in preventing injury in today’s young athlete include:
- Balanced Strength and Muscle Conditioning
- Good Nutrition
- Proper Training and Supervision
- Strong, Well-fitting Equipment and Safety Gear
