Houston Sports Medicine
Houston sports medicine is a unique science in orthopedics. It is the innate understanding of an athlete's body - the areas most stressed by common sports movements and those most vulnerable to the repetitive force, motion or aggressive impact.
Sports medicine is also the understanding of the rigors an athlete’s sport imposes on their bones, joints, ligaments and tendons - and equally the passion that an athlete has for his or her sport. Therefore, treatment must not only repair an injured limb but also prepare it for the same rigorous activity upon recovery.
The treatment options selected for an athlete often differ from that selected for a less active individual, because the limbs and joints of an athlete will return to the same activity that
initially prompted the injury or condition.
A big part of sports medicine is proper conditioning and rehabilitation. Athletes with well-conditioned muscles and balanced strength in opposing muscle groups are able to better protect joints
and avoid serious injury or recurrence, recovering more quickly when injury does occur. Following an injury, or working through an over-stress condition causing inflammation, rehabilitation is key. An effective
ongoing rehabilitation program has the potential to restore athletes to pre-injury condition.
The most commonly treated sports injuries and conditions include anterior cruciate ligament
(ACL) tears, rotator cuff tears, cartilage tears< and fractures and
dislocations. The right treatment for these sports injuries is crucial to maintaining a stable joint environment and avoiding injury to other parts of the
limb, posttraumatic arthritis, or the early onset of osteoarthritis.
In some cases rehabilitation centers in Houston can be used as an effective treatment option, avoiding more invasive procedures while preserving joint function and stability.
